Center for Applied Geoscience, University of Tuebingen (Germany)
PhD Studentship in Applied Environmental Economics.

The Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen invites applications for a three-year funded PhD studentship at the D-Site group within the Center for Applied Geoscience. We seek applicants with solid mathematical skills as well as a strong academic background in economics. The scientific focus of the work will be on the transfer of state-of-the-art economic and operational planning techniques to support and guide environmental decision making. Applicants should be highly motivated and committed to pursuing inter-disciplinary research particularly focusing on environmental issues.

Ideal candidates have experience in conducting decision analyses for complex problems and using real options, but do not necessarily need to be familiar with the contemporary objectives of regional environmental planning. The task will be to deal with groundwater, surface water and and use, as well as contaminant land management topics supported by the broad spectrum of the researchers within the ZAG.

We expect a high degree of commitment. In return we offer an interesting field of work, an opportunity for creativity and favourable working conditions. We particularly encourage female applicants, since women are underrepresented in science and ZAG is engaged in enlarging the quota. Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualification.

The studentship will be funded at the BAT IIa rate (50%). The start date is March 2005 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The selected candidate will be employed by the Central Administration of the University of Tuebingen.

Applications should be sent to

Emergency Scholarships Available for Some Students Affected by Tsunami
By KELLIE BARTLETT

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for students from Indonesia,
Malaysia, and Thailand who may no longer be able to study in the
United States because of tsunami-driven financial losses at home, two
organizations announced on Wednesday.

The Institute of International Education and the Freeman Foundation
have invited accredited colleges and universities in the United
States to nominate up to four students per campus for the awards.

The students must be citizens or permanent residents of the eligible
countries; they must have been enrolled in an associate or bachelor's
program as of December 2004; and they must have an immediate need for
financial help for the spring semester. Colleges are not required to
match the grants, but they must give the students some additional
form of assistance.

"By providing emergency assistance to students from Southeast Asia
whose families may have lost their homes or livelihoods, our goal is
to alleviate immediate financial burdens and provide a measure of
security during these difficult times, when so many have lost so
much," Houghton Freeman, chairman of the Freeman Foundation, said in
a written statement.

The deadline for nominations is February 1. A second round of
nominations may be held later.

Further information about the grants is available on the institute's
Web site:

Wageningen UR helps tsunami victimsUsing knowledge and expertise to help with rehabilitation in the affected regions.

Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands wishes to offer its knowledge and expertise to the governments and organizations which will be working on the long-term task of rehabilitation in the disaster zones. Over the next few weeks, a working group led by Dr. Bram Huijsman will inventory the sorts of expertise that Wageningen can offer, and where it can make a real contribution. Various Wageningen disciplines are represented in the working group, including Professor of Disaster Relief, Georg Frerks, and the author of the UN report on Disaster relief in Africa, Professor Rudy Rabbinge. On the basis of the working group's recommendations, the Executive Board will offer help in the form of advice.

Knowledge about food production, food security, health, water management and rural development is crucial to the recovery of the affected regions. Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) knowledge about siltation, for example, could be applied in tackling the problem of contamination of agricultural land with seawater in Atjeh (Aceh). This problem must be solved as quickly as possible, as the next harvest season is approaching.

A number of Wageningen University students come from areas affected by the disaster. Those who wish to interrupt their studies to go home and support their families or help with reconstruction will be given the opportunity to do so. The university will pay their travel
and accommodation expenses.

Wageningen UR will also offer ten scholarships to students from countries hit by the tsunami, to enable them to contribute knowledge and expertise gained from a Wageningen Masters course to the long-term rehabilitation of the affected regions.

On 26th January, students will from a circle around Wageningen town centre, symbolizing their solidarity with the disaster victims in Asia. At least 3,000 participants are needed for this `living heart', which is the focal point of fundraising campaigns by student societies over the next few weeks.

Indonesian students in Wageningen are carrying out a number of fundraising activities for the victims in Atjeh, such as repairing bicycles at student flats and holding a fundraising day in a
University building on 20th January, which will include an auction of Indonesian articles.

MARCH 1 DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR NIEMAN FELLOWSHIPS
http://www.ijnet.org/FE_Article/newsarticle.asp?UILang=1&CId=271468&CIdLang=

Non-U.S. journalists have until March 1 to apply for the next round of Nieman Fellowships.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism will award 12 fellowships to journalists to spend an academic year of study at Harvard University. The program gives journalists the chance to walk away from the newsroom for a while to expand their academic and intellectual horizons.
Harvard University does not, however, offer a dedicated journalism course.Fellows pursue any of a wide variety of other academic interests, for bothpersonal and professional development. Some pursue studies in a reportingspecialty, while others explore the diversity of Harvard's schools and departments.

The Nieman Foundation pays for tuition, including classroom and librarycosts. It also provides financial assistance to offset the high cost ofliving in the Boston area. However, fellows must look for other sources of funding. Typically, candidates work with foundations and journalistic
organizations in their own countries in their quest for money to support the fellowship.

Applicants must be working journalists with at least five years of full-time, professional  experience in the news media. Reporters, editors, photographers, producers, editorial writers, cartoonists and Internet specialists are all eligible.

One fellowship is set aside each year for a South African journalist, through sponsorship from the Nieman Society of Southern Africa. The society's South Africa office handles the application and selection process, and the deadline for this fellowship is February 11. For information,
contact nieman@iafrica.com.

The foundation also awards 12 fellowships to journalists in the United States. The deadline for U.S. applicants is January 31.

Opportunities from Pantau Foundation

A new course in Indonesia will give journalism students the chance to learn how to add a more dramatic writing style to their reporting.
About 30 student journalists are eligible for the two-group course, organized by the Pantau Foundation for February 7 to 11 in Semarang in cooperation with Hayamwuruk magazine at Diponegoro University. A group
of professional journalists are taking the course from January 10 to 20 in Jakarta.

Fiction writer Linda Christianty will lead the student course with Agus Sopian, a former editor of Pantau magazine. Janet Steele, a professor from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and former Pantau editor Andreas Harsono joined Christianty for the professional course in Jakarta.

The Pantau Foundation formed when the magazine closed in early 2003. The magazine has been organizing the narrative reporting courses for the pastfour years.

"We do it every semester now, initially with Janet and Andreas, because we think that print media in Indonesia do need to understand this genre," said course coordinator Anugerah Perkasa. "The print media cannot compete with TVs with inverted pyramid-styled stories. They need to offer deeper and analytical stories to their audience."
